Position Responsibilities
Mechanics must be familiar with all aspects of vehicle operation and must understand the functions of the major components and systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Incumbent performs a variety of duties related to the reconditioning of class 8 equipment with focus on complete chassis, diesel engine and hydraulic equipment repairs.
• Diesel mechanics are responsible for diagnosing operational problems and making repairs in diesel engines and hydraulic equipment.
• Auto mechanics carry out routine and scheduled servicing.
They check the mileage of the vehicle and its service records, and complete the work specified in the Shop service schedules.
They also complete simple servicing tasks, such as changing engine oil and filters or checking lubricant levels.
• Mechanics check the operation of the fuel and ignition systems to diagnose and repair problems such as poor starting or heavy fuel consumption.
They repair or replace components that are subject to wear, such as brake parts, steering and suspension components, tires and exhaust system pieces.
They also diagnose and repair brake, steering and suspension problems.
• Mechanics comply with all Safety regulations and policies.
Computer Skills
Cummins and Detroit Diesel Software is preferred.
Education Requirements
Associate Degree in Diesel Technology.
Certificates of Completion for training in Cummins and Detroit Diesel Technology preferred.
Highly experienced in Heavy Engine trailers
Experience Requirements
5 years of experience in related field.
Core Competencies
Incumbent must have good analytical skills to diagnose problems and make decisions about the most suitable repairs.
It is required to operate diagnostic equipment if the shop diagnostic technician is out.
Competent at using servicing and maintenance tools and equipment, and be familiar with the different categories of lubricants and service parts.
Mechanics need good interpersonal skills to discuss vehicle problems and solutions with Maintenance Director.
Must have good organization skills, and have basic math skills for tracking trends and for report writing.
Physical Requirements
Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions, is around fumes/odors and chemicals, and is around heavy machinery/safety hazards.
Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and must be familiar with Materials Handling equipment.
